We can begin to look after ourselves as Assistant Life Mechanics by recognising we are not responsible for the choices and decisions other people make for themselves. Our role is not to control, advise or instruct, but to offer a space for people to reflect on useful principles which can help create a life lived well. As we begin to recognise this, we do not need to feel bad when others journeys are not what we hoped. Instead, we should see our willingness to listen, learn and love as the most significant success we can have when working with others. Therefore, our practice doesn’t need to be perfect, and we shouldn’t expect it to be. Further, we don’t need to perform, and undertake our role as someone else might. Instead, we should authentically be ourselves and proficient in knowing why we do what we do, its limitations and how we can support people with compassion and growing skill.
