At the heart of The Life Garage approach is a focus on the idea that it is the individual who has answers and agency to change. The Assistant Life Mechanic’s role is, therefore, not to direct or advise, but to contribute to creating the conditions in which the person they are supporting can access their own knowledge, ideas, motivation, and capability to address the challenge they face: “This speaks to the very heart of coaching: building self-awareness and enabling people to find the answers themselves through active listening and genuine inquiry.” Whilst not training to become coaches specifically, as Assistant Life Mechanics you will be developing a coaching informed approach to wellbeing which takes place through the everyday conversations and relationships you already have: “A conversation where the coach acts as the facilitator to the coachee, so that they learn, gain insight and take action toward a specific and agreed outcome.” These conversations do not need to be lengthy, like those a trained coach might have, but they are purposeful. The role of the Assistant Life Mechanic is, therefore, not to have all the answers but to listen to, and empower people to direct their own action and learning, and take responsibility for their decisions.
