The core concept of this session is an exploration of hopefulness and how it differs from false hope, negativity and mindlessness. This includes discussing some of the practical characteristics the participant will need to develop. Exploration exercise 1 encourages the participant to consider whether they have a natural tendency towards pessimism or unrealistic optimism. Exercise 2 explores what each of the positions on the spectrum of pessimism to optimism offers the holder. The first of our two tools is the The control-influence-accept (CIA) model. This is an exploration of how identifying what we can change, what we can only influence, and what we must accept, has to do with our approach to life and decision making. The second is learning to look after ourselves. This is all about putting the CIA model into practice by designing what we would like our life to look like if we were to take self-care seriously.
