This session on becoming your own life mechanic is based around the ideas of positive psychology and taking responsibility for our own change journeys. One of the important points to consider in this session is that change only occurs when we work at it, but this does not necessarily mean things will always be fair. Further, all change comes with a cost. There are two exploration exercises: Exercise 1: Positive psychology is all about working with your strengths. A link is provided to the free Via character strengths survey so participants can explore their personal psychological strengths providing them a basis upon which to build. Exercise 2: The aim of this exercise is to encourage the participant to consider what things they can and can’t influence in life. This is aimed to help participants plan changes they can make rather than designing excuses into their change journey through making it reliant on changes over which they have no control. There are two tools to be developed, the first of theses is the SELF coaching model. This is a simple tool for the participant to use to help them structure their approach to their own decisions and change journeys. Based on our own model of self-coaching. When using this tool with someone, the role of the Assistant Life Mechanic is to use questions and reflect answers back to the person to help them explore and make decisions. The second tool is around Control and its limitations. The point of this tool is to help participants explore; firstly, what they can have a realistic influence over; and secondly, the cost of the decisions they make.
