As well as active listening, the other fundamental skill for the Assistant Life Mechanic is to be able to ask questions and make responses which will promote the individual being able to understand and make decisions for themselves. These types of questions are known as non-judgemental questions. This starts with our reassuring responses when we are listening to someone. For example, by using responses such as ‘Really?’, ‘When?, or ‘Oh?’, we can allow someone to know they are being heard, and build rapport, without interrupting the flow of what they are saying. Although, we do need to consider how we voice our responses as ‘really’ can sound reassuring or doubtful and questioning. Types of questions or responses to avoid are ones that are really intended on us guiding the person, advising them, or rejecting their perspective.
