Underpinning the idea that we are to be Assistant Life Mechanics is the concept of fixer or understander. We can see our approach to working with others as existing on a scale between being a fixer and being an understander. A fixer is someone who hears what a person is saying and wants to solve the problem for them. An understander is someone who hears what a person says and wants them to understand and resolve / respond to the issue for themselves. We all have a starting point. If we gravitate towards being a fixer, we are likely to want to offer advice and to want to do things for the person we are working with as our starting point. For example, we might advise someone that they really need to arrange an appointment with a debt advisor and then make the appointment for them. If we gravitate towards being an understander, we are more likely to challenge assumptions and hold the person to account for the decisions they decide to make. So, returning to our example, an understander might ask the person if there are any services which they might consider, such as debt advice, and then ask them what they could do about it.
